Classification. All the MSS have the same order of stanzas and contain the complete poem with the exception of DEIK, in which l. 3 is missing, and MTa1 which omit the fifth stanza. Appel did not have a1 at his disposal.

The MSS fall into two main groups: ADEIK and CMRTa1. Cf. 3, 4, 5 (jois—joy), 21, 27, 28, 31 (prodans—propdas, etc), 32 (loing, etc—hom), 42. The first group proves to be the more stable. DIK form a sub-group (cf. 7 (iā—iam), 8 (with MTa1), 20 (soll), 39 (se) (with CT)). The particularly close relationship of IK is evident in 10, 22 (fag) (with CER), 36, 41 (nueg) (with MRT). ADE have common readings in 36 (pres) (with CR), 38, 41 (nuoitz, etc) (with Ca1), AD being further linked in 5, 22 (faitz, etc) (with MTa1). The position of E, as Appel suggests, is not altogether clear. It appears to belong basically to the first group but inclines quite often to the second, cf. 5 (joi), 21 (dig), 31 (propdas), 32 (hom). A similarly separates at times from DEIK to join MSS of the second group. It is the only MS of the first group to contain l. 3. It is linked with CMT in 7 (sui—suy) and joins MRa1 in 39 (si), CR in 8 (sui, etc) and R in 26 (word order), 34. It is also interesting to note that in stanza V, which is missing in MTa1, A offers a number of independent readings (cf. 25, 26, 28, 30), but insufficient evidence is available to draw any positive conclusions.

CMRTa1 form a rather more loose grouping than ADEIK. RT both offer a large number of individual variants, while C is the least independent of the five. The MSS generally reveal an intricate and complex interrelationship in which the two sub-groups MTa1 and CR may broadly be distinguished. The various relationship patterns are indicated below:

Metrical scheme. Seven coblas unissonans of six lines and a tornada of three lines, following the scheme of the last three lines of the stanzas:

(Frank: 755: 1). According to Frank, the poem is the only example of this rhyme scheme.
