D’EISSA LA RAZON QU’IEU SUOILL

(366.11)

MW, II, 23; Delius, p. 42.

The MS. variants (cf. 3, 7, 10, 11, 13, 14, 17, 23, 27, 29) show that ADGHIKNS(F) usually stand against CM. a varies, adhering sometimes to the first group (7, 17, 19, 23, 27), sometimes to the second (10, 11, 13, 14, 29), and sometimes standing alone (3, 12, 25, 33, 34, 39). As for internal groupings, IK, as usual, are almost identical, and DH are closely allied (cf. 19, 20, 31, 35, 38).

Five coblas doblas: 7a 7b’ 7a 7b’ 7a 5b’ 7b’ 5a. Same scheme Gausbert de Poicibot 12. Maus 249. Contrary to Peirol’s usual practice where coblas doblas are used (cf. III, XI, XII, XVI, XVIII, XIX, XXI), the poem contains but five verses and no tornada, i.e. the rhymes of stanza 5 fail to find an answer. Is it to be supposed, therefore, that a sixth verse (and tornada?) has been lost? CM, on the other hand, have only four verses.

Musical setting: G 44 (Rmi, III, 419). See Appx. Plate 3.

Base and Orthography: A.
