POMAIROLS, DOS BAROS SAI

(366.24)

Numerous divergences are to be observed in the two surviving MSS., the most important occurring in ll. 1, 17, 23, 37, 46, 61. Both MSS. contain several lines which are faulty with regard to the number of syllables, and it therefore appears necessary to compile a composite text.

Six coblas unissonnans, with two tornadas, each of five lines: 7a 6b 7a 6b 7c 6c 7d 7d 6c. Maus (362) does not cite this poem.

The attribution of this poem to Peirol rests on the evidence of one only of the two MSS. which contain the tenso; in the first line, N has [ ]eirols against the Pomairols of a1. To assume the reading Peirols would result in a line of six syllables instead of the requisite seven. Moreover, in stanza 3, both MSS. have Peire; in stanza 5, N has Pomairols, and a1 Peire de Pomairols; in the first tornadaboth MSS. have Pomairols. A chance reading of N does not seem to offer sufficient grounds for the attribution of the poem to Peirol, especially in view of the versification difficulty mentioned above.

Base and Orthography: N.
