Two lines of tradition emerge from the variants, which show a clearly-defined group ABDIKN2 standing opposed throughout to the remaining MSS. (17, 20, 29, 36, 37, 47, 54), but occasionally joined by C (9, 18), SU (16) and a1 (12, 18, 81); this group (gp. α) is confirmed by the stanza order and the absence of stanza 6 and the tornadas. All the other MSS. (gp. β) derive from a common ancestor (17, 29, 36, 47, 54, 81), but show divergences and a pronounced tendency to individualism, as well as a considerable number of errors, many of them serious; this group however alone preserves the complete text. Common errors and variants establish close links between M and T (10, 37, 42, stanza order), S and U (6, 28, 54, 55, 59, 61, 72, 81, stanza order), and R and U (7, 15, 31), but also reveal, among the individual MSS. of these subgroups and between these latter and other MSS., a complicated relationship which defies classification and points to contamination (MU 41; MR 10; TU 27; MTa1 20; MSgT 49; SUa1 53; SSgU 20; CT 25, 41; CMT 47; CMRT 52, stanza order 1–4; cf. also ll. 24; 52; 81; 16, 54; 18).

The group ABDlKN2 reveals only slight internal divergences (12, 16, 55, 77), AB and IK having as usual almost identical readings. Practically free from errors and individualism, it offers superior readings and alone has a stanza order which is logical and consistent (cf. notes). The missing stanza 6 is supplied by CMSU (which agree in making it precede stanza 7), and the tornadas by CMR (8), M (9) and CMSU (10). The order of these varies in the MSS., and we adopt, with Jeanroy and De Bartholomaeis, the only satisfactory one. There is no reason to doubt the authenticity of stanza 9. The groupings may therefore be summarised as follows: AB, D, IK, N2, (P) ; C (Dc) RSga1, MT, SU.

Base and Orthography: A. In stanzas 6, 8 and 10 we follow C, which offers on the whole the best text.
