14. se tener que andindic. See note by Stronski, Folquet de Marseille, p. 226.
36-7. Cnyrim, Sprichwörter, 758. Cf. also Folquet de Marseille, 6, l. 22 (Stronski, ed. cit. p. 33), ‘Qu’eu sai qe·l fuocs s’abrasa per cobrir’.
38-9. Tot. Tost (cf. ADIKLN) seems contrary to 36-7.
es remasuda. The precise meaning of remaner here is not altogether clear. Translate (a) with vencuda, ‘to be, become’ (‘Hope is completely conquered’)? Or (b) ‘to cease to exist’ (‘Hope, (now) conquered, is no more.’ Or, perhaps, ‘Hope, (when) conquered (quickly?) ceases to exist’)? Or, possibly, (c) ‘to remain’ (‘Hope (though) conquered yet remains’). The proverb in 36-7 might suggest (c); but 35, together with the antithesis expressed by v. 5 (Pero . . .) supports (a).
56. qu’el a desesperansa. C (qu’a desesperansa) lacks one syllable. |
