3. folla conoissenssa. Folla in this context is to be interpreted as a transferred epithet or as an ellipsis, i.e. the pleasant reception I had when I first made her acquaintance instilled in me a foolish (? vain) hope. Cf. l. 24.
5. Appel (op. cit. p. 343) suggests a revised reading ‘Cela on plus m’entendiei finamen’, on the ground that no is apparently lacking to the line as it stands in the text. With the exception of T, all the MSS. are in substantial agreement, and there appears no just cause or reason to amend their reading. Plus may be interpreted in an absolute sense (= to the highest degree), anc being translated by ‘ever, always’.

24. orgoillosa temensa, i.e. the fear of losing the hope that the poet has just spoken of leads him presumptuously to blame and reproach the lady.
26. sen. Despite the reading gein (gen) offered by ADaIKR, the reading of CNTa (sen) gives the better sense, as well as a better rhyme.
29. aver tenensa here conveys the idea of ‘power of resistance or survival’ rather than ‘power to sustain resentment’ as suggested by Appel (op. cit. p. 343).
