Aston, S. C.. Peirol. Troubadour of Auvergne. Cambridge: University Press, 1953

366,005- Peirol

1. Ren. Chabaneau’s correction is obviously justified.

6. ai mespres. Chabaneau suggests es mespres, but ai mespres surely makes better sense.

7. perdon . . . repres. A suggested correction for an obvious mistake (mespres) on the part of the scribe.

10-14. Possibly a reference to the poet’s wanderings, and to his hope of finding another patron in Blacatz.

13. vil’ e paes. vilas paes is devoid of meaning; it is possible that the scribe has copied vilas for vila e.

14. The MS. has one syllable (e) too many.

20-1. The reading of the MS. is obscure. For lor read bon? sojorn = ‘livelihood’ (Levy, Prov. Supp.-Wört. VII, 758 (2))? Or ‘abode, past-time’ (Appel, Prov. Chres. Gloss. p. 306)?

22. ben faita per centura = ‘slim-waisted’?

23. per un cen = ‘a hundredfold’. Cf. Giraut de Bornelh, 22, ll. 53-4; Mas a me no·n donetz parer Qu’eu n’ai gazanhat per un cen (Kolsen, Giraut de Bornelh, I, p. 382).

24. non . . . mais. To be understood as a comparative negative.

26. port . . . largura = Marseilles?

28. The MS. reading (s’es) offers another poor rhyme.
Blachas. Jeanroy (Poésie lyrique des troubadours, p. 177, n. 1), listing references to Blacatz, comments ‘allusion peu claire’. The line is ironical.

29. baordar. The verb is here used normally as an intransitive verb. See Stronski, Folquet de Marseille, pp. 226, 272.

33-4. Both lines are short in the MS.
