Linskill, Joseph. The Poems of The Troubadour Raimbaut de Vaqueiras. The Hague: Mouton & Co

392,030- Raimbaut de Vaqueiras

NOTES

Five coblas unissonans of eight lines, with two tornadas of four lines and one of two: a a b b c c d’ d’ (es, atz, er, endre), lines of ten syllables. Frank 168:3.

9–11. The syntax is awkward, cors of l. 9 being the object of conseilha of l. 11, where the noun is repeated in the pronoun ·us. Possibly l. 9 is corrupt; it has one syllable too many in the MS.

10. mas. Here and in l. 44 this word is best understood as “since”; the poet (or perhaps the copyist) has already used it in l. 7 (MS. a1) with this meaning, in place of pos.

15. es. The subject is probably paratges (l. 11) or some similar idea.

atendre. The sense inclines us to see here a variant of atenher (cf. l. 49: empendre, for empenher).

17. la plus avinen res. Possibly the origin of the “senhal” Plus Avinen of l. 45.

26. This line is short by two syllables.

32. qe rics seria·l mendre. Read qe·l r. seria m. ?

35. contessa de Burlatz. Cf. Introduction, II, and the Provençal Biography, B. She was the daughter of Count Raymond V of Toulouse (1148–94) and wife of Viscount Raymond Roger of Béziers (1167–94); she died c. 1200.

37. q’ont qe. This emendation of the incomprenhensible MS. reading qontre (cf. the variants) is suggested by the sense and the subjunctive form vivatz.

38. The line being short by one syllable, we supply ni before jovenz.

41, 45. Mon Segur, Plus Avinen. For the identity of these ladies, cf. Introduction, II.

45. vau. The MS. va appears to be an error.

49. bels amics. Probably not a “senhal”.
