I. Although hurt may come to me from love, I shall not cease to uphold joy and song as long as I shall live; and yet I am in such trouble that I know not what may happen to me, for I see that she to whom my heart attracts me does not deign to love me.

II. From her do I receive no propitious indication that any mercy of hers may avail me in my sorrow. But I will beg her to remember me, for if love does not bring her to me, then let pity so constrain her.

III. Fair lady, if my friendship pleased you greatly, what a miracle it would be if you loved me! But now, since it pleases you not, if joy did come to me it would be fitting that even greater thanks for it should be yours.

IV. At night she torments me and in the daytime she does not leave me in peace, so much does her courtesy and beauty torture me. Alas! what shall I do more than I do now until desire kills me or until she is moved by pity to show herself more gracious to me?

V. So firmly is my heart set on her that I think of nothing else, and never did anyone love better and with less fickle intent. Therefore good fortune should be mine and yet sorrow is my lot! Behold if there was ever meted out in love any treatment worse than this!

VI. Go, O song, straight to where she is, for I have no other messenger in the world I may send. And since I have placed myself entirely under her rule, beg her not to show herself intractable towards me.

VII. Alas! lady, may some pity steal into your heart, for a little benefit can alleviate my great hurt.
